Newsworthy Highlights

To capture the interest of their diverse population, the school has adopted the small schools concept. Ten small units of 80 to 150 students are taught and advised by a team of 4 to 10 interdisciplinary staff members, who stay with the students for their entire four years. Small school themes reflect the interest of the students who select them. The current small schools include: Business and Computer Technology; Culinary Arts; Health, Athletics, and Technology; ISIS; Journalism; Law, Economics, and Government; Medical Technology; Performing Arts; Radio and Television; and Transitions: Science, Math, and Technology. This innovative schools-within-a-school design has a history of success in being an encouraging model for young people.

DuSable has adopted an ambitious plan to improve the academic proficiency of its student body. Along with the small schools concept, the school has focused on block scheduling allowing 90 minute class periods every other day. The instructional plan is also designed to serve and facilitate the student population of the community. In addition to the six academic classes every other day, a forty minute period daily is devoted to teaching reading. The reading teacher also serves as an advisor to the students, strengthening acadmic as well as social skills.
