Community Description

As one of Chicago's general high schools, Sullivan serves a varied student population in the thnically diverse community of Rogers Park. Most of their students live in the community. One fourth of their students are enrolled in one of their three Options for Knowledge programs which draw students from both in and out of their district.


Demographics of the School

Sullivan High School has a total student enrollment of 1,391. Of those students, 5.7% are White, 58.2% are Black, 26.4% are Hispanic, 9.5% are Asian/Pacific Islander, and 0.2% are Native American.


Newsworthy Highlights

Sullivan has three Options for Knowledge Programs: Paideia Impact, Paideia Preparatory (7th and 8th grade), and Music Options.

The instructional program at Sullivan reflects the educational philosophy articulated by Mortimer Adler in the Paideia Proposal. All Sullivan students participate in weekly Socratic seminars in English and history classe. Other disciplines also incorporate seminars into their regular classwork.

Sullivan has implemented the essential school principle of exhibition of mastery by instituting a Diploma by Exhibition. To graduate from Sulivan, all seniors must successfully participate in a ninety minute seminar and write an acceptable three to five page essay discussing the seminar redings.
